Students in mourning after 2 killed at UCCS campus

Feb 19, 2024

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KDVR) — Police in Colorado Springs arrested a student in connection with the shooting deaths of two adults on the University of Colorado Colorado Springs campus Friday morning.

Just before 8 a.m. Monday, the Colorado Springs Police Department arrested 25-year-old Nicholas Jordan on two counts of first-degree murder. UCCS officials confirmed to FOX31 that Jordan currently is a student.

According to police, investigative efforts so far continue to indicate the shooting deaths were an isolated incident between people who knew each other, not a random attack against the school or other students at the university.

UCCS Police on Friday first received a call of shots fired coming from the Crestone House dorms on campus. Police then found a woman and a man deceased. The woman was identified as Celie Rain Montgomery, 26, of Pueblo. The male was identified as Samuel Knopp, 24, of Parker.

Knopp was a student at UCCS.

“Sam was one of my very best friends,” student Hayden said, adding: “Ever since I got to school here, he has been the person I’ve spent the most time with — my brother, my roommate and my friend.”

“Sam, he was a rock star,” said Axel Brown, UCCS student body president, adding: “He played the guitar. I’m pretty sure he had a band, but Sam provided light to a lot of people.”

The UCCS campus was closed over the weekend. On Monday, students, police and family took steps toward healing together with a walk across campus, speeches and flower tributes.
